The Jacksonville Giants won their tenth straight game in a 133-111 route over the Jackson Showboats. Jacksonville has improved to 12-2 on the season and holds a #8 ranking in the latest ABA Power Rankings. The victory was witnessed by a crowd of local students for school field trip day held at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
The young fans in attendance were cheerful throughout the game and helped encourage the inspired Giants team. Throughout the first half, the students witnessed long range three pointers, striking slam dunks, and an intruding defense that put the Giants in a decisive 65-48 halftime lead.
“As an organization, we feel that it’s very important to give back to our community and allow our local students to witness a great basketball game while enjoying the game day experience,” said Giants General Manager Pam Masters.
The young students also were able to partake in an autograph session with the Giants players, mascots, and coaches. School staff members also got involved when two local Duval County school teachers made half court baskets to win $500. The first teacher made it on the first try, so the Giants organization opened it up to let another teacher attempt a basket.
“It was a great time for the entire Giants community,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams.
The excitement continued throughout the second half as the Giants continued to extend their lead over Jackson. Former Georgetown player Aaron Bowen and team veteran Ed Horton led the Giants with 17 points each.
Jacksonville had eight players score in double digits. Larry Dumas(16 points), Jermaine Bell (15 points), and Clarence Tillman (15) rounded out the top scorers. Bell had 16 rebounds, which gave him a double-double.
