Giants Remain Unbeaten in Dominant Win over St. Augustine Glory
Story by Matt Potak
The defending ABA National Champion Jacksonville Giants remain unbeaten with a commanding victory over the St. Augustine Glory. The Giants dominated the game from start to finish, outscoring St. Augustine 134-93. The win puts Jacksonville at 2-0 overall.
“Another great team win,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams. “I was really impressed with the team defense as a whole. We are learning to play together at the perfect time right before our west coast road trip.”
Coach Williams Defense started the game strong, holding the Glory to only 15 first quarter points and keeping them under 100 points for the remainder of the game. St. Augustine had issues landing shots and maintaining offensive possessions.
The Giants continued to mix up their defensive looks with multiple man and zone principles. Bernard Nugent and Miguel Paul combined for nine team steals. Jacksonville, as a team, hauled in 43 defensive rebounds. The overall team speed of the Giants kept St. Augustine out of rhythm the entire game.
Offensively the Giants are averaging well over 100 points this season. The style of play this evening was no match for St. Augustine. Tonight, Jacksonville continued a fast tempo scheme which utilized their explosive guard play.
Newcomer Travis McConico led the team with 22 points with Miguel Paul (19 points) and Dylon Cormier (17 points) rounding out the top scorers. Paul and newcomer Brent Williams both combined for six-three pointers in the win.
Point guard Maurice Mickens added, “Hard work pays off.”
